Laboratory tests and diagnostic of steel wire ropes

Steel wire ropes are among the most crucial elements in various types of hoisting equipment including: mine ahafts, ski lifts, cranes, and winches. They also serve as load-bearing components in numerous structures, such as bridges and sports stadium roofs. The Laboratory of Ropes and Hoisting Equipment at the Central Mining Institute – National Research Institute in Katowice conducts comprehensive research on the mechanical properties of steel wire ropes, supplemented by diagnostics and model testing. Laboratory tests encompass determining the actual breaking force of the rope, elongation, modulus of elasticity, and rope torque, as well as fatigue life testing. Rope diagnistics involve magnetic testing using conventional MTR methods and the MPM method. Furthermore, modeling enables the analysis of the states of tested objects under conditions that are practically impossible to replicate in real-world scenarios. The results obtained from experimental tests performed on rope samples of various constructions provide invaluable information regarding the influence of diverse factors on their mechanical properties. Mathematically describing these properties and the processes of change occurring within them is very challenging and necessitates numerous simplifications. This difficulty stems not only from the complex structure of the rope itself but also from the impact of external factors, which often exhibit a random nature. For research and development purposes, particulary when designing new types or modernizing existing rope constructions, the developed mathematical models, along with the measurement results of strength parameters – such as the actual breaking force of the entire rope, strength efficiency, rope elongation, modulus of elasticity, and torque – allow for the assessment not only of the influence of these aforementioned factors but also of the overall quality of the rope.
